I’m a certified Structural osteopath, Movement & mobility coach (Kelly Starrett, The Ready State), Ayurvedic Yoga massage Level 5 (Mysore, India), (Sports) Massage therapist, Yoga instructor (RYS-200 hours, Rishikesh, India), Personal trainer (PaleoTraining, Spain), & Fascial Maneuver Coach (Human Garage). I feel passionate and driven to help myself and others to live pain free, perform optimally, re-connect and re-strengthen our bodies and live with Vitality and Joy.

I have a Dutch/Spanish background, grew up in South America, and have been traveling most of my life. From an early age on, I have been fascinated by movement, sports and well-being. At 20 years old, I started suffering from different back injuries and chronic fatigue. This led to a beautiful yet challenging path of physical and emotional healing and recovery, as well as personal and professional transformation. 

I am currently based in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, where I work as an osteopath, massage therapist, movement instructor and lifestyle & vitality coach. At the start of 2021, I started studying with the Human Garage and have recently certified as a Level 1 Fascial Maneuver Coach. With this work, we are helping people help themselves and I feel extremely stoked about this journey! Music and the ocean are my home! Getting to know Rafael

How did you discover Human Garage? 

Initially I got introduced to Human Garage by a podcast Garry did with Ben Greenfield many years ago. Ever since then, I have been following their work and was pleasantly surprised when I saw that they were introducing the Fascial Maneuvers, December last (2020).

How have the Fascial Maneuvers helped you personally? 

I live a busy lifestyle, where I do multiple bodywork and personal training sessions per day. This takes a big toll on body as well as on my energy levels. The maneuvers have helped me immensely to keep my body and mind in check! They have helped me release tension that has been stuck in my body for 10+ years. My body feels and performs lighter. There is less resistance and more grace and fluidity. I breathe deeper than ever! 

Other things I have witnessed:

  • Mood is lifted
  • Calmer & more focused
  • Dreams are more vivid
  • Sleep is deeper
  • I tolerate days of less/bad sleep better
  • Intuition is heightened 
  • Recovery from sports/exercise is better

Moreover, the maneuvers are teaching me to see and approach the body in a completely different light. It’s a fascinating journey! Lots to learn here.

Who do you want to help – what people do you want to most focus on? 

I am inspired and motivated to help people that are committed to their own wellbeing and health. The path of healing, recovery and improvement takes dedication, time and exploration. There are no magic pills or shortcuts. We have adapted the body to behave in certain ways, many of which are not serving us and are causing excessive pain, tension and disease. With the proper care and focus we can reset the body in incredible ways and get our vitality back!

More specifically, I feel inspired to work with sport enthusiasts and athletes. The maneuvers can teach us to slow down, to flow and they can teach us to be less aggressive with our bodies. In sports and in the fitness sector we can become very harsh in the way that we move, train and perceive our physiology. I love the softness that the maneuvers bring to the conversation about movement, performance and healing, and would love to help guide people to feel this for themselves.

What is your favourite fascial maneuver? 

Impossible to say! Everyday my body is in a different place, asks for something unique and responds differently to the maneuvers. But if I had to chose one, I would say the Pull-Over. I love the compression it creates and the release I feel afterwards. I love experimenting with all the maneuverers, different breathing techniques and just having fun with it and exploring where they can take me!

What is the most challenging aspect of your life or life story? how did that make you feel? What did you learn from it? How did it help you become who you are today?

I have been a gipsy almost all of my life. A very sensitive one! My parents split when I was a teen and my family ‘dispersed’ all over the world when I was 18. I went into the world with a sense of ‘search’. Search for home, belonging and well-being. This led to me explore many studies, countries, cultures, experiences, jobs and careers. This journey too was paired with several physical injuries, not feeling at home in my body as well as struggling with low energy levels.

This all created a great recipe for me to come face to face with my physical and emotional health, with the shield I created around myself (I am Cancer in astrology), with my belief systems as well as with how I was conditioned by the world and how I conditioned myself to be.

Unwrapping these elements (always in progress!) was painful as it was also quite individualistic. It was very I and Me focused and I hurt others and myself in that process. But I am thankful and grateful for where it has brought me and I see it as an important milestone in my journey. On a professional level, it has shown me the path of service. On a personal level—once I started seeing my fears and ‘closedness’, as well as accepting and forgiving these, it gave me the inspiration and strength to explore ‘openness’. As a result, I feel more creative, more joyful, more balanced and more connected every single day—with myself and the world around me.

Describe any major insights you’ve had since taking the fascial practitioner course, or, if none spring to mind, that you’ve had in the last 12-24 months? 

  • Pay closer attention, tune in deeper, move slower.
  • Know where you are and where you can go.
  • Feel your emotions, honour them, own them. Don’t let them own you. 
  • Don’t attach. Don’t detach. Stay open. 
  • Your body is way smarter than you are. 
  • Your intention matters.
  • Don’t spend energy you don’t have.
  • We need each other deeply

What originally ignited your interest in Human Garage? what about your experience thus far has you enthusiastic about being a part of our practitioner network? 

I am fascinated by their continuous drive, curiosity and willingness to explore new things in order to help others and understand the human body better. I love the fact we are coaching people to help themselves and inspiring them to take their health, lifestyle and well-being to the next level. As practitioners, we are creating a lovely and harmonious community that allows us to share and learn, and most importantly, to express ourselves. It’s really beautiful.

If you have a single “superpower”, as a coach/practitioner, what is it – and did it emerge naturally or did you cultivate it, and if you cultivated it – how? 

I believe I have a great capacity to see and feel others with great compassion and care. I am calm in nature and I have a lot of patience when working with people. I tend to bring out softness, energy and positivity out of them. Since a little kid I have had an innate curiosity for all things body, movement and health, and I have never stopped studying and experimenting with these. This personal experience, plus a good dose of intuition, allows me to feel what is out of place, to meet people where they are on their own healing journey and it also enables me to see and respect the time and space necessary for something to come together. My superpower? Laughter.

Is there any aspect of your coaching/practitioner game that you feel is not quite as robust as other aspects of your repertoire – and how do you work around that to deliver a world class experience?  

I am confident about the things that I am able as well as unable to do. As an osteopath and massage therapist, I have learned to identify when, within my skillset, I can work with someone and when I can’t. Sometimes it is my job to problem solve and sometimes it is my job to know when somebody else can help my client better. The maneuvers are new to the world, and as practitioners I feel the best thing we can do is support each other to the best of our abilities so that we can keep growing both as individuals as well as as team, and keep delivering a world class experience.
